Jessica Gilmore

Salisbury, NC (Rowan County)
What does she do? Jessica is a senior in Environmental Studies Major at Catawba College in Salisbury, NC
Favorite part of earning her certification? Jessica enjoyed meeting and connecting with educators from North and South Carolina—some outdoor educators and some traditional—makes for a great learning environment
Certification experience that stands out? The Partnership component of certification was a great experience. It helped me hone some interpersonal skills and it led to experience writing grant proposals and planning events.
Her Action Partnership? For Jessica's Action Partnership she developed a new EE program—TREK (Targeting Recreation and Environmental Knowledge) In October of 2009, she approached both the Center for the Environment and Horizon’s Unlimited in Salisbury to partner in creating an outreach project to use on the Center’s preserve to promote local Citizen Science. She researched materials, cost, and potential target audiences as well as created a logo for the project. She wrote, and was awarded, two grant proposals to fund the creation of nine TREK backpacks: three outfitted for bird watching, three outfitted for insect observation, and three outfitted for the study of trees and plants. have also helped develop a plan for participants to use the packs—including a check out and evaluation system—and organized an event in April to promote pack use.
CONGRATULATIONS, JESSICA!
