Derek Dunn

Kayak Trip on Philpot Lake
What does he do? I work for Greensboro Parks and Recreation in the capacity of Outdoor Adventure and Environmental Education Specialist. This includes oversight of a 250 acre municipal reservoir (Lake Higgins) that offers a variety of outdoor experiences for the citizens of Greensboro.

What was his favorite part of earning EE certification?
My favorite part of earning my certification is having a baseline knowledge of EE in the state of NC as well as meeting many other professionals throughout the state with common interest and passion for the natural world.

What certification experience stands out for him? The certification experience that stands out most for me is a recent criteria 1 workshop that was taught by Dr. Krings at NC State. The workshop really welcomed me back to the college classroom and got me excited about continuing my formal education and maybe even looking into different science programs.

What was his community partnership project? My community partnership project was a trail restoration at Lake Higgins to include interpretive pieces that can be used by the public or groups attending our EE classes. I worked in collaboration with seniors from New Garden Friends school in Summerfield, NC. The project was a great addition to our facility that included an outdoor classroom, tree i.d. markers, and of course a clear 1/3 mile hiking path.

Congratulations Derek!
