What was his favorite part of earning EE
certification? I really enjoyed traveling around the state learning about
different resources and obtaining resources to bring back to my students.
Having resources (such as books and notebooks and lessons) to write lessons and
teach my students about the importance of environmental education was key to
making this certification relevant.
Collaboration with other educators and professionals was very valuable
and enjoyable as well.
What certification experience stands out for him? There were certain things that are required in obtaining the certification but having the freedom to take workshops and classes that was of my interest really stands out. I am a geology (Earth) type of person so the opportunity to take EELE’s such as Old as the Hills and Rockin on the Ridge as well as the Pisgah Forrest Institute Earth Science for Middle and High School teachers was great and provided hands on activities and resources.
What was his community partnership project? My community project revitalized a nature trial on Riverside High School campus that is open to the public as well as open to every student that attends Martin County Schools. We constructed an outdoor classroom along the trial to allow science activities to take place and many areas were labeled to inform the public of the importance of what they were looking at (such as types of trees, importance of decaying materials and types of common animals that may be found along the trial). We also constructed a fossil pit and a rock garden for students to pick through materials and see what they can find as well as take home. This project was important to me because I wanted to give back to all students and people that live in Martin County.
